No experience needed. Students build intuition for how computers think through games, puzzles, and a walking pixel-art companion. Fun first, concepts second.

Real tools, real concepts. Students train classifiers, explore bias in COMPAS data, and finish with a capstone project of their own design. It gets serious here.

Can my child start at Tier 2 or 3 without doing Tier 1?
Yes, with placement. Students who already have coding experience or a strong math background can be assessed for direct entry into Tier 2 or Tier 3. Reach out to us for an informal assessment — it takes 20 minutes and we'll tell you honestly where your child should start.
What does a session actually look like?
Sessions run weekly: 60 min for Tier 1, 75 min for Tier 2, 90 min for Tier 3. Each session opens with a 5-minute challenge, moves through two structured activities with a facilitator, and closes with a reflection question. We don't do passive lectures — students are building or solving from the first minute.
Do students need their own computer?
Tier 1: no device required. Tier 2: any device with a browser. Tier 3: a laptop is strongly recommended — a Chromebook works for most weeks, but some sessions (Flask, local Python) benefit from a real OS. We can loan devices for students who need them — just let us know when registering.
Is Tier 3 really at the University of Waterloo?
Yes. Tier 3 sessions are held on the UW campus in Waterloo, ON. Facilitators are Algorhythm program leads; UW Engineering and CS students serve as mentors during build sessions and provide code review. The capstone Demo Day is open to UW faculty and community partners.
How do I register?
Join the waitlist from the
home page. When spots open in the next cohort, waitlisted families are contacted first. Cohorts run
September–November and
January–March each year. Tier 3 also runs a summer intensive in July.
